Solving the one thing the old site could never do
Overview
For over 40 years, Worcester-based Avern Cleaning Supplies has supplied cleaning products to domestic and commercial customers, from paper towels to ride-on cleaning machines. We’ve worked with Avern since 2013, starting with PPC and SEO campaigns to help launch their online presence. In 2020, we migrated their store from OpenCart 1.5 to OpenCart 3, but it wasn’t a long-term fit, so in 2022, we built Avern a brand-new store from the ground up on Shopify.
The Challenge
Avern’s OpenCart 3 rebuild in 2020 modernised the platform, but it proved to be the wrong long-term home for the business, and by 2022, a fresh approach was needed. Part of the challenge was product discovery: OpenCart had never given Avern proper filtering, so customers browsing a large catalogue of cleaning products had no straightforward way to narrow down what they were looking for. Rebuilding on Shopify meant solving that gap from scratch, not just moving the same functionality across.
The Result
We built Avern a completely new store on Shopify. To solve the filtering gap left by OpenCart, we used Shopify’s metafields to power a custom product filter, giving customers a proper way to search and narrow down Avern’s catalogue for the first time, something the previous platform simply couldn’t do.
